Vlissingen Pilots (loodsen)

The Westerschelde is one of the most difficult rivers to sail on.
The ships in the Westerschelde are waiting for pilots to navigate between the sandbanks. The pilots are all qualified captains with a university degree in nautical sciences. They have an extensive maritime career, especially as master.

Most ships go to destinations in Belgium: Antwerp and Gent.
The work is therefore divided in 72,5% for the Belgian pilots and 27,5% for the Dutch pilots.

A hotel close the pilot boats and with a view at the sea is the 'Belgische Loodsen Societeit' (Belgian pilots society)
    (see section 'Vlissingen hotels')
