Procedure for Mining Nickel Ore
Nickel ore mining involves several stages, from exploration to processing. The process varies depending on the type of deposit, whether it is lateritic (oxide) or sulfidic. Below is a detailed procedure for extracting nickel ore efficiently and sustainably.
1. Exploration and Site Assessment
Before mining begins, geological surveys are conducted to identify nickel-rich deposits. Techniques such as aerial surveys, drilling, and soil sampling help determine the ore’s quality and quantity. Once a viable deposit is confirmed, environmental impact assessments (EIAs) are performed to ensure compliance with regulations.
2. Clearing and Preparation
The mining site is cleared of vegetation and topsoil, which is stored for later rehabilitation. Access roads and infrastructure (such as power lines and water supply systems) are established to support operations. Proper drainage systems are installed to prevent waterlogging and erosion.
3. Extraction Methods
Depending on the deposit type, different extraction techniques are used:

- Open-Pit Mining: Used for shallow lateritic deposits. Heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, and dump trucks remove overburden (waste rock) to expose the nickel-bearing ore. The ore is then extracted in layers using blasting or mechanical digging.
- Underground Mining: Applied for deeper sulfide deposits where tunnels or shafts are dug to reach the ore body. Miners use drills, explosives, and loaders to extract the ore before transporting it to the surface via conveyors or trucks.
4. Ore Transportation
The extracted nickel ore is transported to processing plants using haul trucks or conveyor belts in large-scale operations. In remote locations, rail transport may be utilized for efficiency. Proper handling minimizes contamination and loss of valuable material during transit.

5. Processing Nickel Ore
The processing method depends on whether the deposit is lateritic or sulfidic:
- Laterite Ore Processing: High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) or smelting converts the oxide ores into ferronickel or nickel matte through crushing, drying, and high-temperature treatment with sulfuric acid or electric furnaces.
- Sulfide Ore Processing: Froth flotation separates nickel-bearing minerals from waste rock before smelting in a furnace produces matte (a mixture of nickel and copper sulfides). Further refining through electrolysis yields pure nickel metal or sulfate solutions for battery production.
