Gypsum is a crucial component in the cement manufacturing process, primarily used as a setting regulator to control the hardening time of cement. Role of Gypsum in Cement
When Portland cement clinker is ground into a fine powder, it exhibits rapid setting due to the uncontrolled hydration of tricalcium aluminate (C₃A). Gypsum mitigates this by reacting with C₃A to form ettringite, a compound that delays the setting process. This controlled delay allows sufficient time for mixing, transporting, and placing concrete before it hardens. Without gypsum, cement would set almost immediately upon contact with water, rendering it unusable for most construction applications.

Processing and Quality Control
Before incorporation into cement, raw gypsum undergoes rigorous testing to ensure compliance with industry standards. Key parameters include moisture content, purity (measured as SO₃ concentration), and particle size distribution. Excessive impurities like clay or carbonates can adversely affect cement performance, necessitating beneficiation processes such as washing or calcination.

The use of synthetic gypsum aligns with sustainability goals by reducing landfill waste from industrial operations. However, variability in composition demands strict quality control to maintain cement performance.
